Struggling to Make Friends in Dublin as a Digital Nomad? Here Is a Guide For You
By Nayra Wladimila
It is quite easy to meet someone in the capital of Ireland: there are always new people from all parts of the world arriving to study, work, or both over here. Add to that the fact that the Irish themselves are known as friendly—which is true!
Even if you are not into going for drinks in the loads of pubs in Dublin, you can still have the craic (their word for "fun") and discover ways to find like-minded locals and foreigners. Dive into this article to learn more!
Join Facebook Groups and Facebook Events
“Digital Nomads in Dublin” and “Remote Work Ireland” might seem like popular options, but sometimes they are filled with advertisements and spam. The same thing happens with the Expats group.
You are likely to engage in groups of people from your home country living here (I am Brazilian and our Facebook group is quite busy!), and in others such as these ones I am part of:
Make Friends in Dublin: The members are very active, regularly introducing themselves and receiving feedback. There are also WhatsApp groups for meetups. A friend of mine has been going hiking thanks to Facebook, and we met people in a park when a meeting was scheduled there.
Women Supporting Women in Ireland: Even more active than the one above, this group is for women to share information about gyms, coffee shops, hiking groups, tours, etc. There are posts where people introduce themselves with big engagement, and WhatsApp groups for meetups. Cool enough, they create subgroups with common interests, such as women living in a specific area of Dublin, women in the age range of 30s-40s, etc.
Digital Nomads Ireland: Differently from other groups with similar names, this one was created by us at Nomad Éire to share information regarding workshops, meetings, and other events in Ireland organised by us and our partners. For example, our Digital Nomad Conference in August!
Be active and engage in the conversations, ask questions, and seek advice.
Go to events through Ticketmaster
No, I am not being paid to say this, but Ticketmaster is a reliable source of events in Dublin.
From stand-up comedy to theatre plays, matches, and of course, music concerts (my favourite category of all, btw!): you can choose what aligns with you, get to know cool places in Dublin, strike up chats with people sharing the same hobbies as you, and have a ball!
Go to Free Walking Tours
The best way to be introduced to a new city: getting acquainted with Dublin's stories and attractions from a local person and engaging in conversations with the guide and the other participants.
The fact that the majority of them are tourists can be a downside if you are going to live here for a while, but it is still a chance to have company for further tours, pub crawls, and walks!
In Dublin, you can join the traditional tours covering Temple Bar and Trinity College, for example, but there are free walking tours offering everything from the musical scenario to a deep dive into the city's history and folklore.
The most famous ones are Yellow Umbrella Tours, Sandeman’s, and Generation Tours. Here, you can find some of the free ones. On this other link, there are some paid ones as well.
Enrol in Gym or Sport Classes
In some gyms in Dublin, you can have everything from swimming pools to fit dance classes for an affordable price (for example, €25 per month). Here is a list of the ones with the best value.
If you are not into gyms, consider joining martial arts centres or sports clubs tailored to your interests.
Embark on a Group Tour
Unless you are travelling on a really low budget, take advantage of paid group tours to explore stunning landscapes while taking a break from work and connecting with other travellers.
Stay in Hostels
I know: if you have been a nomad for the long term you may be tired of sharing rooms. But hostels remain a fantastic option for socialising.
Offer to Take Photos
As simple as that! Dublin's picturesque landscapes and lively streets offer great opportunities for photography enthusiasts.
Explore the MeetUp platform
MeetUp gathers a wide range of activities like art expositions, conferences, tours, bazaars, book clubs, hiking, and language exchange.
