Does Ireland have a visa for Digital Nomads?
Short answer: no. Unless you are an EU, Switzerland, or EEA national, then you have freedom of movement. If that is not your case, you can stay for a maximum of 90 days here under a Tourist Visa. Nevertheless, some of the long-stay permits can apply to you!
The tourist visa is usually ideal for digital nomads, as it doesn’t require proof of income and residency, and does not imply the payment of taxes (a relief!).
Among the nationalities that need it to enter Ireland, several don't need to apply for one in advance before arriving here.
On the other hand, other countries need a Short Stay ‘C’ Visit (Tourist) Visa. Their residents are required to send documentation and pay a €60 fee for a single entry. Some nationalities are exempt from this fee. Check its fees and exemptions and if your country is on the list.
If you are from China or India, are living there, and intend to go to the UK too, the British Irish Visa Scheme may suit you better (but it's up to 90 days as well!).
Important to mention that from the 19th of July, for one year, Ireland will demand visas for refugees.
What if I want to stay more than 90 days in Ireland?
Then a long-stay visa will be required from you. It can be for studying here, for living with a European citizen, or for working for an Irish company or having Irish clients.
If you are not married to a European citizen, your best options are some of the following working permits:
Stamp 0 Visa
You must be fully independent, as you are not authorized to get an Irish job or use public services (in other words, it is necessary to contract medical insurance).
Need to say that you should earn at least €50,000 from outside the country (but it can be from investments or pensions as well). Find out more here.
Start-up Entrepreneur Program (STEP)
This visa would give you 2-year residence permission, renewable for another 3 years if your business progresses as planned. Partners and children under the age of 18 are automatically granted entry too.
You need to have medical insurance, work full-time in your enterprise, and can't have other employment. They are considered when they have less than 5 years of foundation and should be capable of creating 10 jobs here in up to 3 years.
To obtain this visa, you must gather documentation such as a business plan and proof of investments (€50,000) and wait for up to 90 days to be approved. The fee is €350 for the initial application. More information can be found in their guidelines.
General Employment Permit
If you get a job, whether from an Irish company or a foreign company with a presence in Ireland, you or your employer are entitled to submit this application. Your annual salary has to be on average €30,000.
The current fee is €1,000 for a 12-month contract or €1,500 for a 24-month contract. The duration of the permit is 2 years, renewable for up to another 3.
Among the documentation is a signed job offer and proof of qualifications. It can take up to 13 weeks for it to be approved by Immigration. You can find out more here.
Critical Skills Employment Permit
If your profession is listed here and you get a job in Ireland, this visa will grant you immediate benefits: your family doesn't need to pay a fee for their visa, and they can work and study here. Beyond that, despite this visa lasting 2 years, you can change your job after 1 year. After the visa expiration, you can already apply for permanent residency.
The main criterion is that your annual salary must be a minimum of €35,000 (for specific roles) or €64,000.
Student Visa
It is also possible to combine remote work with studies: the English courses are part-time (in the mornings or the afternoons), for example. Bear in mind that they cost an average of €2,000 for a 6-month course with 2 months of holidays.
But can I work remotely from an Irish job?
It is still pretty uncommon to see totally remote jobs from Ireland—in other words, jobs in which you can do your duties from any country.
There is legislation for working from home ensuring that you have a legal right to request it once you have been working for 6 months continuously with your employer and request it at least 8 weeks before the date you intend to start doing so.
On the other hand, the employer has up to 8 weeks to give you a decision. In a negative case, they are obliged to explain their reasons to you. Also, the arrangement can be finished if the business suffers a considerable negative effect from remote working.
But wait, it is not virtually impossible to be a digital nomad with an Irish job! It all depends on what is written in your job contract.
Anyway, as the employment contract is in Ireland, you are eligible for tax payments. Take this into consideration if you already pay taxes to your home country!
Would you try to be a digital nomad in Ireland?
Even without actually having a Digital Nomad Visa like in other countries, Ireland is still worth the stay: here you will find reliable internet quality, friendly people, stunning landscapes, and English as the main language.
